Program Structure:

  • Classroom theory training- 50%
  • Practical hands-on training – 50%

Program Capacity: Maximum 4 trainees

WorkForce Training provides a program to train Boomlift/Scissorlift operators with varying levels of experience to meet or exceed all WorkSafeBC and CSA regulations and standards.

Please note that this program addresses aerial boomlift and scissorlift only.

An Aerial Lifts Reference Manual (workbook) will be provided to the trainee.

Prerequisites

  • Trainees should wear appropriate clothing and steel-toed shoes, if possible.
  • Equipment provided for practical training and evaluations should be in safe operating condition.
  • Equipment may be provided by WorkForce Training upon request at an additional charge.
  • Fall arrest and lanyard (provided by trainer on request)

Program Outline

Phase 1 – Classroom Training (3 hrs.)

During Phase 1 the trainer guides trainees through a comprehensive and interactive review of the operator workbook covering occupational health and safety regulations, applicable industry standards and equipment theory, including:

  • Types of boomlift/scissorlift
  • Main parts of equipment and their functions
  • Basic operating principles
  • Understanding safe equipment operation
  • Fuel types

Phase 2 – Written Theory Test (30 min.)

  • Theory test based on the concepts discussed during classroom training.
  • Test consists of 14 multiple choice and descriptive answer questions.
  • Program Trainer grades and scores each test upon completion.
  • Test answers are reviewed with the trainees as a group.
  • Test results are reviewed individually to ensure understanding.
  • Minimum score of 70% is required to pass the written test.

Phase 3 – Practical Training and Evaluation (remainder of day)

Phase 3 is the hands-on portion of the program where trainees are shown the site operating inspection, pre-use inspection, safe operating procedures, and parking/shut-down procedures.

  • General traveling
  • Stopping, starting & turning
  • Raising and Lowering
  • Maneuvering
  • Load restrictions
  • Emergency operations
  • Special operating conditions

The trainees will be assessed for minimum skill level by individual evaluation using an aerial boomlift/scissorlift. Demonstrated competence of the performance of 8 to 10 maneuvers in a reasonably challenging course is required to successfully complete this phase of the program. Each trainee’s skill level is assessed until an acceptable level of operational competence is observed.

Following this evaluation, trainees are de-briefed and given the opportunity to address any issues they may have regarding any phase of the program.

Documentation

Each successful trainee’s employer will receive these original documents shortly after the end of the program including:

  • Evaluation Form
  • Phase 2 test and results
  • Diploma
  • Operator Certification (wallet) Card

The Aerial Lifts Reference Manual (workbook) may be kept by the trainee.
